Paisley

There’s something about the whole monochrome look that I love. Black and white are bold colours in their own right and together they harmonise uniquely. The black and white paisley jersey fabric on its own, whilst lovely, in my opinion needed support, more oomph, which is why the contrasting textures of the black fabrics are the supporting act to this dress called Paisley.

When I laid these fabrics side by side in their natural state I was drawn to how this medley of fabrics, including the soft cotton jersey with its paisley pattern, welcomed the stretch faux snake skin, which in turn said hello to the jersey lace. They are all fabrics of varying weights, but it was knowing which order would suit the design features of the dress and how much to use that was important.

The jersey lace with its knobbly texture was best suited to the skirt. It has a superb stretch and recovery, especially when sitting, and it had to be lined in a stretch mesh fabric providing additional support, as well as coverage. The faux snake skin is perfect for the bodice of the dress, cinching in the waist; and the patterned detail of the fabric is even more noticeable as light catches the scales of the faux snake skin. The paisley fabric which started the whole journey is so soft against the skin, beautiful for the upper bodice, with the finishing touch of cuffs on the short-sleeved hem edge made in the faux snake skin.

I wanted to speak to the sophistication of the wearer, her confidence in wearing a dress that is distinctive, in the knowledge that this dress encourages her to stand tall and stand out. As I was thinking about accessorising Paisley – with black shoes and bag, which works with the majority of outfits – I thought we could change things up by having metallic shoes and a clutch bag. The style of shoe could have a peep toe, wedged or stiletto heeled. The metallic would add another dimension to the overall style and look; it’s a dress that wants to be dressed up. The only-one-of-a-kind.
